Passion for craftsmanship unites Wendy Morrison Design and New York’s Nazmiyal Antique Rugs

Nazmiyal Antique Rugs, based in the heart of New York City, is recognised globally for its rug expertise and the exquisite pieces it supplies, which now also include Wendy’s hand-knotted rug collection.

Despite being on opposite sides of the Atlantic, there is a powerful connection running through both businesses – a shared passion for handmade rugs, combined with a joy in celebrating storytelling and craftsmanship.

Despite being on opposite sides of the Atlantic, there is a powerful connection running through both businesses – a shared passion for handmade rugs, combined with a joy in celebrating storytelling and craftsmanship.

Gallery owner Jason Nazmiyal, who has been immersed in the world of antique rugs for more than 30 years, explains, My passion for antique rugs stems from a deep appreciation for art, history and craftsmanship. Early in my career, I was captivated by how antique rugs serve as functional decor and intricate works of art, each telling its story of tradition, culture and heritage.

‘The more I learned about the painstaking process of weaving and the symbolism behind the designs, the more fascinated I became,’ he adds.

When contemporary meets antique

Wendy’s designs sit beautifully alongside the wider antique rug collection in the Nazmiyal showroom in Manhattan.

‘Wendy Morrison hand-knotted rugs complement antique rugs beautifully because they share a common thread of artistry and storytelling,’ Jason explains. ‘While antique rugs carry the weight of history and tradition, Wendy's designs bring a contemporary, yet equally thoughtful, perspective to rug making.’

Wendy says, ‘When designing our rugs, I have longevity in mind. Working with the most-talented artisans in Nepal, using the finest techniques, our rugs will stand the test of time and tell the stories that are relevant from our times. It is the authenticity and craftsmanship that make our rugs sit beautifully alongside the Nazmiyal collections.’

When it comes to choosing a favourite from the Wendy Morrison collection, Jason admits it is hard to pick just one. ‘If I had to choose, I’d say Floral Waves Pink stands out for me. The intricate details and the bold interplay of colour and symbolism resonate deeply. It feels opulent and timeless, much like the antique rugs I work with.

‘Wendy’s ability to weave a narrative into her designs is genuinely inspiring, and this piece, in particular, captures the magic of her artistry.’

Look for emotional connection

Jason and Wendy both agree on what to look for when choosing a rug – find a piece you fall in love with.

Jason says, ‘I advise choosing a rug that speaks to you personally, rather than just fitting a specific trend or design scheme. Look for a piece that resonates with your sense of style and evokes an emotional connection - whether it’s the colours, patterns or the history behind it.

"Just as today’s antique rugs tell stories of the past, I believe Wendy’s creations will one day carry the legacy of this era, cherished by future generations as timeless works of art."

Wendy adds, ‘Go with what you love and you will make that design work in your space. Don’t overthink it - your home should be a true reflection of you and where you feel most happy. Choose the rug that resonates with you and makes you smile.’

‘A great rug not only enhances space but also tells a story,’ Jason adds. ‘So, trust your instincts and invest in a piece that you’ll love for years to come.’
