New design Moondance shines a light on the power of colour

A four-part rug collection based around colour, effervescent new design Moondance evolved naturally from luxurious, colour-drenched, hand-knotted Kujaku.

Like Kujaku, with the symbolic peacock at her centre, Moondance celebrates elements from the natural world, and is inspired by the bold and colourful Art Deco patterns of renowned rug designer Walter Nichols.

The Moondance Collection is made up of four rugs, which launch separately over the coming year in line with the seasons. Each rug shares the same uplifting story, but features a different colourway: Life Force, for the full impact of spring in bloom; Euphoria, the epitome of summer love; Wellbeing, in nurturing, spiritual tones for autumn; while the dark base of Nature feels wonderfully comforting and appropriate for all seasons.

Part One, Moondance Nature—our fabulous neutral in the collection—is available to order now and can currently be viewed at our London showroom.

Part One – Moondance Nature

Evocative neutral, Moondance Nature, features a huge bright moon set against a deep black sky. An elegant golden pine tree stretches and shimmers in the foreground, reaching upwards, its many branches full of glorious flowers in bloom, with exotic birds darting playfully amongst foliage.

In Chinese tradition, the Full Moon represents peace and prosperity, while the round shape symbolises family reunion. The evergreen pine tree, which can live for hundreds of years, represents resilience and immortality. The colourful mountains at the base of the rug represent endurance, while the darting hummingbirds symbolise joy. In China, peonies are regarded as the ‘king of flowers’ and symbolise wealth, while the pretty plum blossom represents renewal.

The effect is mesmerising, drawing the eye to the beautifully balanced colours and patterns, each supporting and complementing the other to create a magnificent whole. As the collection is revealed, each design will share the same uplifting message of life, love, connection and renewal, but each of the four diverse colourways will result in a different mood, feelings and emotions.

Journey into colour

‘Each design represents a feeling and emotion associated with her colourway,’ Wendy explains. ‘The first to be launched is our neutral colourway, Nature, composed of a white moon with a black backdrop, the golden silhouette of the pine tree, with a sprinkling of pink peonies and blossom, and a flutter of joyful hummingbirds.

‘Moondance came about as a direct result from recent design Kujaku  and my love of Walter Nichols’ Art Deco design style,’ she adds. ‘I also believe Moondance’s composition lends itself to many colourways that have the power to create different feelings and emotions.’

The power of colour

It has long been recognised that colour has an impact on emotion and human response. Colour can be associated with productivity, creativity and relaxation. Through design, we love to celebrate the power of colour, and the many ways in which it can stimulate, soothe, cheer, calm and nurture us.

The power of colour - and the sheer joy it exudes - is at the heart of Wendy Morrison Design. Not only is colour the perfect partner to the stories our rugs tell, but different colourways give every design her own unique presence and personality.

From bright hues that boost our wellbeing by their sheer exuberance, to the rich, nature-inspired, shades that evoke our planet at its most beautiful and encourage us to respect it, there is a special place for every colour in life.

From a simple design perspective, colour brings imagery and pattern to life. A design in one colourway tells one story, but that same design in a different colourway tells quite another - and evokes different feelings.

This power of colour, and the feelings and emotions different combinations create, sit at the heart of Moondance.
