Crewel Stitch range
Wendy’s has translated her popular Mount Orient rug design from the Orient Collection into crewel stitch in this new range of rugs and cushion covers. In offering this addition to the collection Wendy hopes to provide the style conscious homeowner with an alternative to the usual soft furnishings. These new products, which are hand stitched in wool & viscose by artisans in India, are great as rugs but are lightweight enough to be used as wallhangings, bedspreads and for draping over the back of sofas or over occasional tables. Crewel stitch provides a ‘want to touch’ texture and will add some interest, richness and warmth to a room -perfect for adding a touch of style to a neglected space.
Crewel stitching is a type of surface embroidery using wool. The technique is at least 1000 years old. Many different embroidery stitches are used in crewelwork to create a textured and colourful effect. Unlike silk or cotton embroidery threads, crewel wool is thicker and creates a raised, dimensional feel to the work.
The choice of using soft wool as a base and viscose in the motif elements of the design was an important part of the design and overall effect of these products. The use of viscose creates a shimmering effect, which adds a hint of luxury and opulence to many of Wendy’s rugs. The crewel stitch method particularly shows off the benefits of this beautiful yarn.
