A Kaleidoscope of Papillons takes flight

As thoughts of spring tentatively surface, we’re delighted to introduce a glorious new addition to our Wendy Morrison Design family: A Kaleidoscope of Papillons is a trio of butterfly-shaped rugs in a thoughtfully curated colour palette. This creative collection works beautifully to breathe new life into any nook or cranny that needs a little bit of TLC.

‘Kaleidoscope’ is the term frequently used to describe a group of colourful butterflies, while ‘Papillon’ is the French word for butterfly. Bringing the two together seemed the perfect way to sum up this collection, designed as a trio to be used together.

As well as playing a vital role in nature, helping pollinate fruits, vegetables and flowers to produce new seeds, butterflies are synonymous with beauty. They also share a powerful message, symbolising freedom, lightness and joy, and a reminder to embrace life and let go of burdens.

Positive symbol of transformation

Butterflies are often used to represent hope, fresh starts and new beginnings, and have long been associated in Chinese culture as symbols of love, freedom, romance and beauty.

One of the most-common spiritual meanings of the butterfly is transformation. Butterflies undergo their own incredible metamorphosis; from caterpillar to chrysalis before emerging as a beautiful butterfly. It is a process that frequently represents change and personal growth.

‘I had been revisiting our hand-knotted Renaissance rug, which features a repeat pattern of butterflies and periwinkle flowers, as part of a custom project,’ Wendy explains of how A Kaleidescope of Papillons came about.

‘I was thinking about the story of rebirth and transformation – butterflies are such fascinating things. I started to delve a little deeper into the significance of these lovely little creatures on our planet. Their ability to transform is beautiful itself, but I adore their associations with a wider sense of change and the feelings this creates,’ she adds.

‘I read for the first time that when you have the feeling of “butterflies” in your tummy, which can occur when you are falling in love or feeling nervous, it is a signal that there is transformation going on within. It struck me as such a lovely connection with the idea of change, growth and transformation.’

Joyful inspiration for small spaces

Inspiration for this trio of beauties stems from Wendy’s own sense of style and passion for creating spaces filled with moments of joy.

‘I love to decorate floors, but sometimes, when I come across an empty nook that is too small for one of our rugs, I often feel it still requires a little energy of sorts,’ Wendy explains. ‘In the past, I would often place a plant in such spaces. But then I thought, “what about a pretty little papillon?”; that would certainly bring an empty corner to life.

‘Equally, not all rooms can accommodate a full-size rectangular rug,’ Wendy adds, ‘but this little kaleidoscope trio will bring any area to life and make you smile at the same time. They are perfect pieces to transform any floor.

‘I love taking inspiration from nature and bringing uplifting elements of the outside in,’ Wendy adds. ‘It feels natural for me to want to bring the beauty found outside indoors where I can.’

The individual pieces consist of a yellow butterfly with a sprinkle of lilac; a grounded neutral of darker tones with a sprinkle of aqua; and a third that incorporates all of these, plus pink, orange, gold and a sprinkle of purple. The result is a curated palette that sits beautifully as a collection. A Kaleidescope of Papillon is perfect for creating a stunning vignette.

Wendy shares her style tips

‘Because A Kaleidoscope of Papillon pieces are so different to what we already design, and offer so much scope, I was really excited to style them,’ Wendy explains. ‘I absolutely love them as a welcome in my hallway at home – they are a wonderful way to set the tone and add a bit of fun as they draw you into the rest of the house.

‘I have also used them to pretty up my dressing area, which works perfectly. I love the idea of little stepping stones leading me out of bed in the morning. They look so pretty and feel wonderful underfoot. I think they work really well in a bathroom too.’

Wherever you place them, each little papillon draws the eye and there is a link throughout the colours, making the move from one to another seamless, which helps pull an interior decor scheme together.

‘Bay windows and narrow spaces are both ideal for a papillon or three. Spaces that tend to be overlooked and can seem a little flat can be lifted with our papillons. I’ve found them incredibly versatile and perfect for switching things up at home – they instantly freshen things up.

‘I also like the idea of layering the papillons directly on top of, or partially on, other rugs,’ Wendy adds. ‘They will complement so many designs perfectly, adding colour, interest, warmth and softness. It might just be me, but can one ever have enough floor décor?

‘I’m excited to see how these pieces will be used to transform homes,’ Wendy says. ‘And to see how customers decide to use them – they certainly allow for lots of fun and creativity.’
